Fungal Diseases — Rose Black Spot

CAUSE: Diplocarpon rosae — a fungal pathogen that infects rose plants.
TRANSMISSION: Fungal spores spread through WATER (rain splashing from leaf to leaf) and by WIND. Spores land on leaves and germinate when conditions are warm and wet.
SYMPTOMS:
Purple or black spots appearing on rose leaves.
Leaves turn yellow around the spots.
Affected leaves drop off the plant prematurely — DEFOLIATION.
WHY IT MATTERS: The loss of leaves is the key problem. Fewer leaves → less surface area for photosynthesis → the plant grows poorly, produces fewer flowers and is weakened overall. Severely infected plants may die.
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT:
Remove and destroy infected leaves immediately — do NOT compost them (spores can survive).
Apply FUNGICIDE sprays to remaining leaves — kills fungal growth.
Choose disease-resistant rose varieties.
Avoid overhead watering — wet leaves encourage fungal growth.

Protist Diseases — Malaria

CAUSE: Plasmodium — a protist (single-celled eukaryote). Several species cause malaria; Plasmodium falciparum is the most deadly.
VECTOR: The female Anopheles mosquito — she bites infected humans, picks up Plasmodium, and injects it into the next person she bites. The mosquito is the VECTOR, not the pathogen.
LIFE CYCLE IN BRIEF:
Plasmodium is injected into the human bloodstream during a mosquito bite.
It travels to the liver and multiplies.
It then infects and DESTROYS red blood cells in cycles.
The destruction of red blood cells causes the characteristic RECURRING FEVER.
SYMPTOMS: High fever (cyclical — comes and goes in waves), headache, vomiting, muscle pain and fatigue. Severe malaria can cause: anaemia (from red blood cell destruction), kidney failure, cerebral malaria (affecting the brain), coma and death.
PREVENTION (breaking the transmission cycle):
Mosquito nets (especially insecticide-treated bed nets — ITNs).
Insecticide sprays to kill mosquitoes.
Draining standing water where mosquitoes breed.
Anti-malarial drugs taken before and during travel to high-risk areas.
TREATMENT: Anti-malarial drugs (e.g. artemisinin-based combination therapies). Resistance to some anti-malarials is also emerging.

Comparing Fungal and Protist Diseases

ROSE BLACK SPOT:
Pathogen type: FUNGUS.
Host: Rose plants.
Spread: Water and wind carrying spores.
Damage: Leaf spots and defoliation → reduced photosynthesis.
Treatment: Fungicide, removing infected leaves.
MALARIA:
Pathogen type: PROTIST (Plasmodium).
Host: Humans (and other primates).
Spread: Via the Anopheles mosquito VECTOR.
Damage: Destroys red blood cells → recurring fever, anaemia, can be fatal.
Treatment: Anti-malarial drugs.
⚠️ Common Mistake

The MOSQUITO is the VECTOR for malaria — not the pathogen. Plasmodium (the protist) is the pathogen that causes disease. The mosquito carries and transmits it. This distinction is a very common exam question. Also: rose black spot is caused by a FUNGUS — not bacteria, not a virus.
